On April 29, with the planting of the last Acacia tree in Safaniya, Saudi Arabia, the 10,000-tree planting campaign jointly launched by COOEC and the Offshore Maintain Potential Projects Department (OffMPPD) of Saudi Aramco under the theme "Promoting Sustainable Development, Protecting Biodiversity, and Creating a Cleaner Planet" was successfully completed. This initiative has made significant contributions to enhancing the local ecological environment and advancing the sustainable development of the regional economy and society.
The 10,000 trees planted cover approximately 5.832 hectares of desert land. It is estimated that they will absorb 2,400 tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂) over the next decade, effectively boosting the soil's carbon sequestration capacity and water retention benefits in the planting area, alleviating local sandstorms, and improving the regional ecological environment.
During the event, representatives from both sides personally planted saplings symbolizing cooperation and friendship. Saudi Aramco commended COOEC's professional capabilities and dedication throughout the project implementation, stating that this tree-planting initiative not only brought greenery to the land but also symbolized the friendship between the two parties. They expressed their expectation to continue collaborating to create more value in the future.
Saudi Arabia's extreme climate, with surface temperatures often exceeding 50°C and an annual average precipitation of less than 100 millimeters, makes tree planting in such an arid and scorching environment a "tough contest" between humanity and nature. After extensive research and screening, the COOEC team selected tree species adapted to the local climate, including the Marh tree, Sidr tree, and Talh tree (Acacia). The planting area was divided into 8 zones, each containing approximately 1,300 trees. To address the impact of local climatic conditions on sapling survival rates, the team opted for a direct water injection drip irrigation system to minimize water evaporation. Most of the planting was completed between November and March—the most suitable period for tree planting in the region—with the entire afforestation target achieved by the end of April this year.
For a long time, COOEC has actively fulfilled its social responsibilities by organizing various themed activities, including environmental protection campaigns, safety advocacy programs, and health forums, continuously improving its localized management capabilities and showcasing the responsibility and commitment of Chinese enterprises overseas through tangible actions. In the next phase, COOEC will continue to maintain close cooperation with Saudi Aramco to jointly create a brighter future.
